While Ubiquiti’s UniFi ecosystem is fantastic and has recently made huge strides by adding a native "Ad Blocking" toggle to their gateways (like the UDM or UXG lines), Pi-hole still reigns supreme for power users.

UniFi’s built-in DNS and ad blocking is essentially a "black box"—it's easy to turn on, but it lacks deep customization. Pi-hole, on the other hand, is a dedicated DNS sinkhole.

Here are the primary reasons you should consider running Pi-hole over the standard UniFi DNS:

1. Granular Control and Custom Blocklists

When you flip the ad-blocking switch in UniFi, you are relying entirely on Ubiquiti's curated, hidden lists of what constitutes an "ad" or "malware."

  • With Pi-hole: You have absolute control. You can subscribe to thousands of community-driven blocklists (like the famous StevenBlack lists), add custom regular expressions (regex) to block specific top-level domains, and tailor the exact aggressiveness of your ad blocking.

2. Deep Visibility and Analytics

UniFi's traffic inspector is visually appealing, but it often struggles to give you precise, real-time DNS information.

  • With Pi-hole: The dashboard is incredibly detailed. You can see exactly how many DNS queries are being made on your network, the percentage of blocked traffic, the top permitted domains, the top blocked domains, and exactly which client device is making which request in real-time.

3. Client-Specific Filtering (Group Management)

This is arguably Pi-hole's best feature for a diverse household or office. UniFi's ad blocking is generally an "all or nothing" affair per network/VLAN.

  • With Pi-hole: You can create specific groups. For example, you can assign strict blocklists (including adult content and social media) to your kids' tablets, use standard ad-blocking for your phones and TVs, and completely bypass all blocking for a work laptop that requires access to marketing/tracking links for your job.

4. Instant Troubleshooting and Whitelisting

Ad blockers frequently break things. A smart TV app might refuse to load, or an email newsletter link might not click through.

  • With UniFi: Troubleshooting a falsely blocked domain is incredibly frustrating because you can't easily see the real-time block logs or whitelist a specific domain from the GUI. Often, your only choice is to turn the whole feature off.
  • With Pi-hole: You can simply open the "Query Log," see the exact domain that was just blocked in red, and click a single "Whitelist" button to fix the issue instantly.

5. Superior Local DNS Management

While UniFi has recently added the ability to create local DNS records in the controller, Pi-hole's interface for this is still more robust for tinkering.

  • With Pi-hole: You can easily set up Local A records and CNAME records so you can access your home server via plex.local or homeassistant.lan instead of remembering IP addresses.

The Verdict: Should you switch?

  • Stick with UniFi DNS if: You value simplicity, want a "set it and forget it" solution, and prefer managing everything from a single pane of glass without maintaining an extra device or Docker container.
  • Switch to Pi-hole if: You want detailed statistics, the ability to whitelist broken sites easily, custom blocklists, and per-device filtering rules.
